EdTech Glasnost: The Nuts, Bolts, and Politics of
Open Technology in US K-12
Wednesday, February 7, from 9:15am to 10:00am
Presented by Michael Jay, President, Educational Systemics and Co-Director,
CoSN Open Technologies Initiative
Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the concept of glasnost,
meaning to be open or public, into Soviet Russia in 1985 which led to
fundamental change in the governance and opportunities afforded the
citizens of that state. Open Technologies hold the same promise for
those who sometimes see themselves as living under the tyranny of technologies
and associated structures that are imposed on them. In this talk we
will explore how this openness extends beyond the idea of Open Source
to address, Open Standards, Open Content, and Open Hardware. The opportunities
this new openness affords are not without responsibility. We'll discuss
key trends and your role in affecting change in our educational infrastructure
makes open technologies a sustainable force for that change.

CoSN Releases Second Open Technologies in K-12 Implementation Study
The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN)
will be conducting the second in a series of implementation studies
concerning the Indiana Linux Desktop program as part of the ongoing
K-12 Open Technologies Initiative. Educational Systemics personnel Shaun
Taylor and Michael Jay, who co-chair the CoSN Open Technologies Initiative,
will apply their technical and market expertise in the development of
these two implementation studies in conjunction with initiative advisors.
The first implementation study concerns
the adoption of enterprise Linux in Saugus Schools in California, and
the second focuses on implementation in the Indiana inACCESS program.
Both implementation studies provide technical details about selection,
research, communication, training, support, benefits and problems associated
with each solution. These studies are intended to provide guidance for
school administrators who are considering or in the process of adopting
open technologies in their schools or school districts. Future implementation
studies will focus on open source learning management systems, open
content and interoperability. For more information, visit www.k12opentech.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=102&Itemid=43.
