For over two decades, the research and development associates at Educational Systemics have occupied key leadership roles at companies such as Apple Computer, MECC, Classroom Connect, Bureau of Education and Research, Chancery Software, Houghton Mifflin, MediaSeek Technologies, N2H2 Inc., bigchalk and many others.

Our collective expertise includes instructional and user interface design, market analysis, competitive analysis, functional specifications development, use case development, standards correlation, systems analysis, school and classroom implementation models and software interoperability standards.

 

Michael Jay
President

Michael has committed his career to ensuring that learners and education professionals have tools and services to support quality education. A long time educator, Michael taught Science in San Jose, California where he also worked in developing the first set of Technology in the Curriculum materials for the State of California. He left the classroom in 1986 to join Apple Computer's Classroom of Tomorrow (ACOT) research and development project, serve as Apple’s Education Competitive Analyst, and lead major curriculum related marketing initiatives. During his tenure at Apple, he remained a contributor to science education through many projects including being one of the authors of California's Science Framework of 1990.

Michael left Apple Computer to pursue the development of a technology of his design that dynamically indicates the relationship between curriculum, curriculum standards, and instructional resources for which he received patents in 1998. As founder of Mediaseek Technologies, Inc. he laid the groundwork for many of the innovations in standards implementation and instructional resource integration that followed. He continued the development of tools for children and educators as Director of Education Business Development at N2H2 and VP and GM of Brainium Technologies in the following years where he worked on challenges associated with sustainable 1:1 computing in schools.

As founder of Educational Systemics Inc., Michael and his associates create lasting change in how we learn and educate through their work with corporations and educational institutions. Their clients have benefited through increased efficiency, improved understanding of the K-12 market, improved ability to identify and reach their core customers, and the development of innovative yet sustainable solutions. Their diverse expertise representing educational and corporate leadership, market analysis, development, instructional design, and tested knowledge of all facets of K-12 education are married with a vision that generates success for their clients while advancing their vision for education.

Michael remains active in the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) of which he was an Education Board member for eight years (co-chair for three) and continues to chair the Technology and Development Working Group. He has helped guide the development of the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) Association as he completes his sixth year on its executive board. Michael also has an appointment at Western Washington University as a Research Associate in Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education and is asked to speak in many different venues ranging from national education conferences, investment meetings, and school district faculty and staff.

 

Mary LeDonne

Mary began her career in education as a high school biology and physical science teacher but soon found that she preferred working with middle school students. During her tenure in the classroom she served as a demonstration teacher for hands-on science and integration of technology into the curriculum. She lead the development of a district-wide Technology Implementation plan and has successful written many grants to fund the improvement of science education.

Since leaving the classroom Mary has worked on guides to grant writing, driven strategic curriculum correlations and cataloged digital and video assets. Her intuition about classroom implementation combined with a seasoned perspective about how schools work has proved invaluable to the organizations with which she has consulted.

Mary holds B.A. and M.S. degrees from Mills College where she later served as a master teacher.

 

David Longdon
Research Associate

David began his career in education as a classroom teacher, which included teaching English in Japan and teaching science at an innovative high school in rural Arizona. As a high school teacher he won a National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) Biotechnology Grant, and organized and led adventure education trips to Mexico, Belize, and throughout the Southwest. After leaving the classroom, David joined Chancery Software to develop an education standards and resources correlation system and related software tools. He held leadership roles in product management and strategic planning at MediaSeek Technologies and bigchalk. David has also consulted with Align to Achieve, the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) and KCTS (Seattle Public Television) to provide analytical and sales and marketing services.

At Educational Systemics, David plays a hands-on role in working with our clients. As a team, David and Michael have worked together off and on since 1994, and have a long history of collaborating to develop novel solutions for educational enterprises. David holds a B.S. in Zoology from UC Davis and an M.A. in Education from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

 

Shaun Taylor
Research Associate and Technical Lead

Shaun Taylor specializes in curriculum development, technology, and learning systems design. He has taught middle school and high school science and has been spent a large part of his career developing science curriculum: first through the auto-tutorial biology lab at University of Washington and then with the hands on energy education activities with the Alternative Energy Resources Organization in Montana. He served for 17 years as Vice President for Product Development at Videodiscovery, Inc, Seattle, Washington during which time he has directed the design and development more than 30 videodiscs, 44 CD-ROM titles and an complete online science collection, the Videodiscovery Digital Library (VDL). He has unique expertise in creating interactive simulations that use dramatized scenarios to teach and assess higher-level thinking and process skills.

Mr. Taylor won special recognition from the New York Film Festivals for the Science Sleuths series and was nominated one of the Top 100 Multimedia Producers by the Video and Multimedia Producer magazine. To fund the development of science education products, Mr. Taylor has written more than $8.9M in SBIR and other federal grants through the NIH, NSF, DOE, NASA, and Dept. of Education. He has also developed $1.3M in joint venture product funding. As a research associate with Educational Systemics he has designed and implemented technology for CD-ROM programs, web enabled databases, and online content management systems and correlation tools. He has also worked on a white paper on open source technologies for CoSN and serves as a lead on CoSN’s Open Technologies Initiative. Mr. Taylor has a B.S. in Zoology from University of Washington and a M.Ed. in Science Education from Montana State University.

 

Marci Goldberg

Marci Goldberg has extensive experience in management, marketing, and K-12 education. After several high-tech ventures early in her career, Marci spent 1998 through 2002 at Tom Snyder Productions (TSP) in various marketing roles including VP of Marketing. During her tenure at TSP, she led all aspects of marketing and Professional Development, including product marketing, direct marketing, e-commerce, marketing communications, conferences, and general branding initiatives. Marci served as a key member of the management team setting strategy and managing budgets. More recently, Marci has worked as a Management Consultant to Chicago Public Schools, helping with the district-wide implementation of a new Student Information System. At Educational Systemics, Marci has driven product and business development projects for several clients including McDougal Littell and SRI International. Marci has an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University with a BA in Mathematics and a BS in Secondary Education.

 

Dr. David Vogt
Sr. Researcher Associate

Dr. David Vogt as the Director of Digital Learning Projects within the Office of External Programs and Learning Technologies at the University of British Columbia and is a Senior Research Associate with Educational Systemics. David has extensive experience in educational technology & new media and is currently the David Robitaille Professor of Mathematics and Science Education. While Director of Science at Science World, he developed an award winning interactive science program for schools called Science Brainium. More recently David was VP Technology and Chief Research Officer at the New Media Innovation Centre. David’s expertise includes research into the design and integration of rich learning environments and enabling devices into K-12 environments. David plays a key role in Educational Systemics’ work with Project Inkwell and supporting clients involved with 1:1 related initiatives.

 

Paget Hetherington
Associate

Paget Hetherington's 20-year career has been focused on helping to provide the tools children need to learn. Paget began her career working for Dorling Kindersley as their US and Canadian sales director selling children’s books to publishers. She then went on to market and sell both children's books and CD-ROM's to many other countries around the world . After 11 years with Dorling Kindersley, Paget moved to Vivendi Universal Publishing in Paris where she successfully launched and marketed their interactive children's publishing program across Europe. In 2002, after Houghton Mifflin was purchased by Vivendi Universal Publishing, Paget relocated from Paris to Boston to help the supplemental textbook division, Great Source, enter the electronic publishing business. Since then Paget joined Soliloquy Learning and there was responsible for the sales and marketing efforts of Soliloquy’s speech-recognition fluency program into the school channel.

Paget has a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia. She attended the University of Cambridge, Churchill College during her Junior Year, as well as the Sorbonne. Paget also completed the Radcliffe Publishing Procedures Course in 1986 after graduating from UVA. Paget lived in Europe for 14 years and speaks fluent French.
